EP 87 Setting The Tone‘s Albums of the year top 10 of 2021

TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2021

Trivium In The Court Of The Dragon- simply because ever since arrival of Alex Bent in 2017 the band has gone from strength

Alex joined in 2017 and what followed in my opinion was Trivium’s best album to date The sin And The Sentence, the band followed up in 2020 with the latest album What The Dead Men Say and I honestly could not believe what I was hearing the guys had yet again put another stunner of album, with the addition of Alex the band had gone up a whole level and sounded the best they had ever done, fast-forwarded a year through COVID times and the guys dropped In The Court Of The Dragon which again in my view is their best album they have put out, this is an album that see the guys again raising the bar and taking cues from all of their back catalogue and combining it into their best work to date, I don’t think it’s no coincidence that since the Alex they guys have put out a stunning tribology of albums together long may it continue my love for this band like many runs deep.

Mastodon Hushed And Grim- to be honest this album could have easily taken the number one spot this year between Trivium and Mastodon they both have delivered stunning albums in 2020 and its hard to choose between the two of them both are very different bands and very different albums, but both amazing. Hushed And Grim is an album that the. More you listening to it, it just grows and get stronger on each listen, with so many different layers to each song on the album, the album is a great album to chill out too.

Gojira Fortitude- the 7^th album from the guys, I feel this is a real return to form, packed with heavier riffs and melodic tones, a sense of a real drive behind this album it feels a bit lighter than Magma in the sense there’s a real bounce to it.

Holding Absence, The Greatest Mistake of My Life- this one feel like it came out a life time ago no just April 2021, this is the second album from these guys and wow they have put together a masterpiece of an album the opening track on this alone is one of the songs of 2021 it’s a perfect opener to any show

URNE Serpent and Sprit -sometimes you are meet with a surprise in life and honestly, I think we all found that this year URNE, if it was not for an email from their PR company to ask for my thoughts, I would never have found this band, in such a short amount of time these 3 guys have quickly grown in popularity, Serpent and Sprit sometimes showcases the bands talents as it takes cues from their influences

As Everything Unfolds within each lies the other- the debt album from this incredible band who no doubt have had a great year recently just completed a tour with Holding Absence, within each lies the other offers some great guitar tones, stunning vocals, hooks and drive without doubt one of the albums of 2021 the future is very bright for this band.

Myles Kennedy- put out The Ides of March the follow up to year of the tiger, being honest this blows the first album out of the water with some great writing some awesome guitar tones, Ides of March is so delicate and yet such a great listen.

Mammoth WVH losing a parent is never easy especially when you’re the son of one of the world’s best guitarist the universe has ever seen. What I loved about this album was it really showcased Wolfgang own talents it allowed him to step out onto his own forge his own legacy a great rock album with a touching track to EVH Distance. And also, this album for me wins artwork of the year I would recommend buying it on vinyl to truly appreciate the detail in the artwork.

A Day to Remember You’re Welcome, -all thou this album seemed to take forever to come out for whatever reason. It’s one that overall is not this bands best in terms of heavy hitters but this does contain some amazing tacks like last chance, blood sucker, resentment and looks like hell and its one that had to make my list

Limp Bizkit Still Sucks-This one is a late arrival some may consider this 32 mins of pure popp, but for me I’m just happy to have LB back if you have ever taken the time to listen to a LB album from front to back particularly their earlier work then this album will not come as a surprise. Stand out track for me Out of style because Wes Bowland Riff and that line from Fred we should be on the same team.

we are greeted with an impressive riff and I just felt when this track first starts it reminded me so much of beautiful people that riff, the overall feel of it does feel very goth punk, with Rob zombie marlin Manson vibes, I really love the riff and the vocal display here.

something these guys have never failed to do is put out a record with power and energy and yet again they have done that with It’s over, a power house of a track powerful guitar with a drive and some nice riffs, met by a powerful set of vocals with and some impressive hooks, I really love this so much power and drive.

so, I have hear/seen this name Bob Vylan about for a while so now it’s time to check out what the fuss is about, GDP is a high octane track, taking cues from Fever 333 and The Prodigy, GDP is something very different on so many levels lyrically there’s a real messaged to be dived into and musically the energy form the track is so infectious I really enjoyed GDP, I’m excited to hear more and see how this progresses no doubt Bob Vylan is an exciting and sights and sounds to be seen and heard

to those that are aware of this band won’t be surprised by the fact this new track is an instrumental one, we open with really cool synth and then a lovely section of guitars which is shortly met with some thick bass lines with a real punch to the chest, and slowly we start to hear some drums come in, we then come back to the guitars which take on a world of the own, to wrap this up this is a really cool track and if I’m being honest I sometimes wonder if these type of tracks are harder to write than to a track with lyrics, it’s got a great feel to it and I’m keen to hear the rest of the album as I just wonder if this a concept album as this feels like there may be a story to it all

when I first heard Sorry I’m not dead I was getting 80’s elecontric vibes with a sprinkle of Roxette, a track packed with hooks and plenty of energy I really liked the mix between the guitars and synth, one of the things that I really enjoyed is around the 2:30 the song transforms into another layer we have some cool synth and the guitar just goes up a level with a nice guitar tone and we hear a little eruption in the chorus as Danyell lets us all hear the words won’t take it no more , let me know your thoughts I personally loved this and think it grows on you.

This track straight away pulls you in with its epic riff that has a natural grove to it, the overall structure of the song is nicely structured and it reminded me a little bit of korn meets spiritbox and architects.

The production is crisp and clean, some very powerful guitars which as I have already said have such a grove to them it really brings this all together

This one is an absolute banger, a great vocal display from Josh, there is some great energy brought to the table from Zack and Josh, Die In the city is about chaos and embracing it and letting it have its moments, die in the city is packed with classic Hara riffs and lyrical hooks, yet again showing this bands diversity within their catalogue go and check this out

Another track that comes out the gate, no messing here a nice heavy riff into some great vocals, with a few hooks to start with, some impressive guitar tones on this, a nice melodic chorus keeping as well as keeping the energy levels nice and high.

Leaves openings with a really impressive Riff a riff with grove, the guitar work on this track is stunning and offers melody and the riffs are a plenty vocal being honest not for me, the vocal style is bit like cradle of filth, overall, the track is nice and heavy some awesome melodic tones.

Out of time, which is a hook power house of a track, vocally its really impressive a great display, the guitar work is very impressive as there is a real drive behind the guitars, production is great its crisp its clean and there is so much energy and bounce to this absolutely in love with this ep

Dogtown reminds me so much of a rock track from the 70’s perhaps this is because the obvious is it should be a track from the 70’s the riffs are epic some real funk and drive behind them, I absolutely lover the guitar work on display from the scales to the solos and the cool tones on display we could be here for 20 mins talking about that along, vocals are nice would like to hear perhaps a bit more power in the vocals, not trying to be rude or knock WinterBurn but that would be the one area I would look to see a changed.

Jeeze how good is this new Mastodon album.

I have enjoyed Mastodon for a number of years, Hushed & Grim.

Has to be their most complete album to date. it’s amazing and so strong.

a powerful and classic album, Loved every second of it.

What I would say is don’t stop this album half way through its an album you start and finish in one listening as this keeps the momentum
